Before starting my freshman year at Columbia University, I decided to spontaneously take a gap year. This came from self awareness in knowing what was best for me at the moment. I didn't feel prepared enough to begin college. I wanted to have complete authority over my time before diving into another structured academic environment.

GLO’s Empowerment Initiative sought out to address the discrimination within the Asian continent but, at the time, colorism wasn’t a word that was ever discussed in Asia. Upon doing her own research in 2016, Co-Founder Zehra Naqvi began to compile documentaries, articles, journals, films, and anything that could help her understand the phenomenon that is colorism.
